Have you ever wanted something so bad, I’m talking reeeeaaallly bad, so much so that you could taste it?
You dreamt about it, you talked about it all the time, you thought about it, you may have even tried to live it and put it into your life.
But it was something new. Something you didn’t have a whole lot of experience with. And no one around you had ever done it either. So you didn’t have a lot of support.
You did a little research and finally, wham, there was the perfect person right in front of you. They did what you want to do, led the life you want to live.
So you moved full force into what they had to offer. You bought every book they published, every training program they created, you even signed up for the advanced coaching program to learn from the best.
If you want the life they have, the best way to do it is to make them your mentor. They are the guru with everything; and they are worth every investment you make.
Until some point in the future they aren’t. Oh sure, you may have learned a thing or two. You may have put some of their ideas into place. Some of it may have even worked … for a while.
But now, after putting all of your energy into learning from your perfect guru, you are no closer to having their lifestyle then you were before. What went wrong?
And ever so quickly, you fall out of love with them. They didn’t deliver the perfect package. You didn’t become “them”. What happened?
So you sit around and pout for a little while, contemplating life once again. And then the process starts all over again.
And nothing. You make a little progress for a while, and then it all goes astray one more time.
Why does this keep happening?
It isn’t them. Its YOU.
It’s the shiny bright object syndrome
Gurus became gurus because they found the magic solution, the swallowed the magic pill that brought them to their current status of success. They did what it took to make it BIG. And once they found success, they did what comes naturally to gurus … they decided to share. They enjoy success so much that they want to share it with the world. They want to take others by the hand and show them the way.
And they do it with the best intentions in the world. But there is one tiny problem.
You can’t take someone by the hand and lead him or her to success. They won’t go with you if they truly don’t want to go. And therein lies the problem.
No matter how many steps you present, no matter how simple you make the process, no matter how much detail you go into, a person can’t be led where they truly don’t want to go.
And in fact we see it all the time.
Take a look at the multi billion dollar diet industry to see many examples. Diet books are published every single day. There are diet gurus in every corner of the world. One of the biggest reality television shows is the Biggest Loser, now in its 16th season.
There is no better example of a guru taking someone by the hand and leading the way. And yet does it work for everyone? Nope. Not at all.
In fact, there are even shows where people have returned to the show after they return to their old habits and their old weight.
It’s not about the guru. It’s about the person. It’s what they think, what they believe, and what they are willing to do. It’s about the choices they make and the path they are willing to follow.
You see, I can tell you that cupcake you are about to eat is loaded with sugar, filled with calories, and made with chemicals no human should eat. I can tell you it’s filled with poison that will kill you slowly in the coming years. In fact, I can tell you anything I want about the cupcake, because in truth you’ve made up your mind one way or another whether you will eat it or not. If you want it, you’ll eat it. If you no longer eat sweets, there is nothing that will get you to bring that cupcake to your lips. End of story.
We like the promise of a big change. But when it comes to the hard work it takes to get there, our love of it disappears very quickly. We may be willing to put in 25 percent of the effort, or maybe even 50 percent, but the rest? Well, we’ll have to think about that.
This applies to every industry, every guru out there, weather it’s the latest way to lose weight, or the newest way to market your business.
The guru truly does have the answer; she knows the solution to the problem you are facing. And she’s taken it 100 percent of the way to make sure it works.
She gets it. She invented a solution that has worked for her.
But unless you are willing to do EXACTLY what she says, without deviation whatsoever, you won’t have the same results.
Because 25 percent of your effort will never equal 100 percent of her effort.
It just won’t.
So ultimately it isn’t about what guru you choose or what program you choose to follow. It’s about what you do with the program that matters most.
25 percent of your effort will come from the formula given to you by the guru.
But it’s the other 75 percent that matters most.
And that’s where you come in.
That 75 percent includes your ability to apply what you learn from your guru to your own life. It includes your determination – your action – to move forward and get things done. And it includes your ability to take the guru’s advice, and no matter what, keep applying it over and over again until you discover the “secret” and find out how to make it work for you.
If you stop at any point, if you don’t stick with it, and work it until you have complete success, you’ll feel that let down feeling you get when a guru’s advice simply doesn’t work.
YOU are the only one can make it work. YOU are the only thing standing in your way.
So what should you do now?
Choose a guru. Whatever is your most important topic, your most important strategy to move you forward right now, and dedicate the coming weeks and months to learning all you can from her.
Put all other gurus aside. Focus in on your one and only guru, and never lose sight of what you are truly trying to accomplish.
Dedicate every day to the 75 percent that will help you find success. Learn from your guru and apply it. Stick with one step until it works. Move forward slowly following your gurus advice explicitly, whether you agree with it or not, whether you think it will benefit you or not. If you’ve made the dedication, stick with it. To alter any piece is to deviate from the plan, and will guarantee you’ll never have the same level of success.
Reap the rewards.
Rinse and repeat with every guru you follow.
Only you can get to the final position you are striving you. You and you alone. Others can help, can provide you with a plan, but they can’t make you go. Only you can do that.
