I never set out to create a lifestyle business. It just happened.
We built a website that was so niched, it started attracting a very distinct clientele. The more we defined our customer base, the easier they were to find. We found them all over the world, which meant we didn’t have to open up an office and keep regular office hours; we could handle everything via the Internet on our terms.
I never set out to create a lifestyle business; but now I wouldn’t have a business any other way.
I’m a storyteller; that’s what I do. So even though I’m currently on my gap year, seven months into my yearlong stay in the Pacific Northwest, I still like connecting with people around me. Meetup is great for that; I’ve found different groups to visit every single week, and love keeping active and getting to know the surrounding area as well.
When I meet fun people at a networking event, I take the next step and agree to meet them for coffee or lunch or dinner to get to know them better. After all, you can never have too many friends around the world.
That’s how I found myself sitting across the table from Emily, an Oregon native who currently works as a nurse.
She’s tired of her life and wants something more.
We talked about the concept of lifestyle business and all that it means. And while she had never heard the term before, very quickly she saw its potential.
“So I could create a lifestyle business around all that I’ve learned about parenting two step-children.”
Yes, you can do that.
“Or I could create a lifestyle business around losing weight. I’ve lost 50 pounds and kept it off for two years.”
Yes, you could do that too.
The wheels started turning. And I could see how quickly she found all the things she loved in her life had real potential.
But of course that was just the beginning.
Because if you’ve never thought about a lifestyle business before, there are many things you have to do in order to make it a reality.
That’s where a Lifestyle Business Blueprint comes in handy. Because once you create one lifestyle business and understand all the nuances involved in creating and operating one, you quickly see the potential in a lot of the things you do every day.
There are four pieces to a Lifestyle Business Blueprint.
Start with what you love
Just like Emily started brainstorming all the different areas of her life she loves, you have to start at the beginning as well. It’s not about thinking about what has business potential; it’s thinking about what you love the most.
What if you were diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and given a short time to live. Against the odds, you recover by instilling new habits into your life. You eat better; live better. And your new goal is to share all you’ve learned with the world. That’s how Kris Carr created her Crazy Sexy Wellness business years ago.
The key to a successful lifestyle business is creating something that you live every day. It’s a part of who you are. You simply could not live another way. You talk about it whether you get paid for it or not. You would never shy away from living it because it’s who you are; who you’ve become.
Now lets find the business
I know what you’re saying now. I have a love, a passion, but everybody out there is talking about it. It’s a crowded environment. Everybody’s doing it.
Let’s look at that for a minute.
You’re female. You’ve had stage four cancer. You lived to tell about it. You switched your eating patterns. You’ve found good health through exercise. You have a different lifestyle than you did before the diagnosis.
But everybody’s talking about it! You’re not unique in this field. How would you compete against everyone already out there, including Kris Carr?
There are 7 billion people on the planet. It takes a very small fraction of those people to sustain a business. And as people, we all resonate with different people for different reasons.
Some people “speak” to you. Others don’t. And they never will.
If I want to create a $100,000 business, I simply need to find a few people that believe in what I do.
One person willing to spend $100,000 will give me my desired results.
So will two people willing to spend $50,000.
Or 10 people willing to spend $10,000
Or 100 people willing to spend $1,000.
Or 1,000 people willing to spend $100.
Or how about 10,000 people willing to spend $10?
Think 10,000 people around the world believe something similar to what you are passionate about? Probably so.
It’s about the lifestyle too
You can’t create a lifestyle business without the lifestyle.
What lifestyle do you truly desire?
- Do you love everything about your life … except the job?
- Are you tired of your job, tired of your house, tired of your city, maybe even tired of the country you live in? Maybe your goal is to sell off everything and see the world for a while; developing a business that allows you to write from anywhere you have Internet connections.
- Do you want more time for your kids?
When it comes to women, we have many different aspects to our lives. And in some areas, we simply don’t have the time we need to do the things we would like to do.
That’s what it means to design a business built around the lifestyle you desire.
When you have your passion laid out in front of you, it’s easy to move forward because not only do you have a deep desire to do what you choose to do, you’ll also find the time to do it in. But you do so in a way that’s convenient for you.
I like taking Fridays off just for me. Sometimes I work. Sometimes I write. Sometimes I play. Yet it’s on my terms; I do what I choose to do.
Maybe you have a standing lunch with your best friend on Wednesdays. Work that into your schedule.
Work when you want; play when you want. It’s all up to you.
And the best thing is thanks to the Internet, you can find customers from all over the world that are ready to work when you are. Which means you can talk with some of them early in the morning, or late at night because they are half way around the world. That gives you plenty of time to do other things, the things that make your life unique to you.
When I spent six weeks in Europe two summers ago, I would write early in the morning, spend the day playing, come back to our apartment late afternoon into the early evening to make all my phone calls (which was morning in the US), and head out again after 7 to enjoy an evening out on the town. I got more done during those six weeks then I do even now because I was very focused in what had to get done!
The more you give your life priorities, the more you define how you want your days to look, the easier they are to bring to reality. See it. Do it. It can be that easy.
Why a lifestyle business blueprint is easy to create, easy to follow
Here’s the thing. Most people starting up a business believe it takes special talent. In reality, the only thing it truly requires is hard work. It requires you to get up every single day and ask yourself one question: What is the best use of my time today?
When you start up a lifestyle business, it’s all about servicing very unique customers in a very individualized way. You never have a desire to grow a lifestyle business to reach the masses – a lifestyle business would never service millions of people. Instead, a lifestyle business is simply meant to give you the lifestyle you crave. To be able to do the things you truly want to do.
To never have to worry about paying the next mortgage/rent payment.
To never have to worry about paying for the things you love.
To always be able to spend time with the people you love most.
To always be able to do the things that mean the most to you.
To always be able to help out other people and show them what you know best.
But you do need to know exactly what you desire. I you haven’t had a chance to work with my free What’s Next workbook, download it today and use it to walk through all of these steps and more. It will help you define your perfect lifestyle, what lifestyle business you are best suited for, and how you can best approach each new day of your life from this point forward.
It may be the eye-opening experience you’ve been looking for.
