Yes You Can Create A Blog About A “Boring” Topic

September 3, 2013 by Lori Osterberg Leave a Comment

The world is filled with exciting topics.

Dinner.

Taxes.

Carpeting.

Wait a minute. Those are exciting?

Well they can be. You see everything in our lives – from the moment we get up until the moment we go to bed – has the potential for some excitement. Because excitement is relative to your current experience and how you view it.

Carpeting can be very exciting if you are in the process of redesigning your basement and are in the middle of choosing your décor.

Carpeting can also be very “exciting” if your guest just broke a bottle of red wine on your near-white carpets.

It’s all relative to our experiences.

Which means whatever you choose to build your business around, whatever you choose to create a blog for, has the potential for being exciting just by the way you approach it.

Because life happens. And on any given day, we each find new and “exciting” things that are going to be of interest to us. And when we look in your direction, you are the one who wants to be there. Providing the details, providing the stories, and providing the guidance that leads us right back to doing business with you.

Skip The Boring

Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at a “boring” topic and follow through how to make it exciting.

How about sleep. That’s boring, right? We all sleep, but its not something most of us would bring up at a Friday night cocktail party with friends. But if you truly wanted to create a blog all around the sleep concept, where would you begin?

Start by asking yourself questions based around the concept, and discover interesting things that people might be looking for …

  • Why do we need so much sleep?
  • Why do we sleep differently as a baby than we do when we are in our 70s?
  • Can we function with lower amounts of sleep?
  • Do we sleep differently when someone is sharing our bed?
  • How do dreams affect our sleep patterns?
  • Does bedding impact the way we sleep?

All of a sudden things don’t seem quite so boring, right? In fact, you may have even been a bit intrigued just by the sounds of the questions.

And that’s the power of changing any topic from “boring” to “wow”. Its all in the way you ask your questions and provide your answers.

By asking traditional journalistic questions around your topic – the who, what, where, when, why questions – you can quickly find a whole series of concepts in which you can create “wow” type content.

What Questions Are They Asking?

While its possible for me to come up with a series of questions on my own, luckily I don’t have to rely on my own ability to find out what people are thinking. Sites like Quora will tell you exactly what other people are thinking.

Performing a quick search using “sleep” as my term, I find questions like:

  • Why do we sleep?
  • What can I do to sleep better?
  • What is the healthiest way to sleep?
  • What are the best-kept secrets about sleep?
  • How do I get more out of less sleep?
  • What’s the best way to sleep on a plane?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of sleeping naked?

Yep, you can tell people have a lot of questions about sleep. And some can turn into very “interesting” topics that could raise a lot of eyebrows both on your blog and on the social sites in which you post to.

And Quora is just one site of many in which you can find out what people are thinking about. Head to Yahoo Answers and do a quick search. Or even head to Google and find out what people are thinking.

We can even find a variety of Ted talks based around the sleep concept – and Ted talks are always created by some of the most brilliant minds in the industry, so they definitely have value within the topic we are looking for.

Our Natural Sleep Cycle

Why do we sleep?

How to succeed? Get more sleep

Okay, you’re getting the picture by now, right?

Content is more than dry ol’ content. Its more than defining a few terms and describing what you do in clinical format. How To Blog Better

Instead its about capturing attention by stretching the concepts as much as you can, and giving people a reason to become excited about what you do.

You may still do the “same old boring stuff” in your business. But your concept can be approached in an infinite number of ways. It’s all in how you look at it.

And now you know there’s a lot of ways to look at it, right?
